Sun Ra Arkestra Biography
Sun Ra Arkestra is an experimental jazz ensemble rooted in the music and cosmic philosophy of bandleader Sun Ra, the influential composer, pianist, and arranger born Herman Poole Blount. Founded in the mid-20th century, the Arkestra became known for combining big-band jazz, improvisation, electronic sounds, elaborate costumes, and Afrofuturist themes. Its evolving lineup has carried Sun Ra's distinctive musical vision across generations.
The ensemble's broad repertoire draws on Sun Ra compositions and arrangements alongside jazz standards and explorations shaped by the performers onstage. Its legacy is closely associated with recordings such as Space Is the Place and The Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra, which showcase the group's adventurous approach to rhythm, texture, and ensemble playing.
